The first part of Psalm 136 gave a look at who God is. He is great above all gods. He is Lord over all. There is none greater in authority than He.
Verses four through nine tell of God’s great wonders in creation. O Give thanks “To him who alone doeth great wonders: for his mercy endureth for ever.” (Psalm 135:4) What are some of God’s great wonders?
1. God made the heavens. “To him that by wisdom made the heavens: for his mercy endureth for ever.” (verse 5) Do you ever look up into the beautiful sky and get lost with wonder? Often in the daytime, you might see the clouds floating along or changing shape or swirling into a storm. What about the sunshine? a gorgeous rainbow? At night, you might see the stars, the moon, or even a comet. How small we feel when we look at the greatness of God’s heaven, yet God still thinks upon and cares for us and extends His mercy to us. “3) When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; 4) What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?” (Psalm 8:3,4)
2. God made the earth and all that is in it. “To him that stretched out the earth above the waters: for his mercy endureth for ever.” (Psalm 136:6)
3. God made the lights that light up the heavens. “To him that made great lights: for his mercy endureth for ever.” (verse 7)
4. He made the sun. “The sun to rule by day: for his mercy endureth for ever.” (verse 8)
5. He made the moon and the stars. “The moon and stars to rule by night: for his mercy endureth for ever.” (verse 9) The end of Genesis 1:16 says simply, “He made the stars also.”
This great God that made the heavens and the earth and everything that is in them is the God that cares for you. Psalm 147:4 says, “He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names.” In this same passage of Scripture, the Bible also says, “3) He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds… 5) Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite. 6) The LORD lifteth up the meek: he casteth the wicked down to the ground. 7) Sing unto the LORD with thanksgiving; sing praise upon the harp unto our God.” (Psalm 147:3 and 5-7)
God cares for everything that He has made, even the tiny things. Luke 12:6 says, “Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God?” Sparrows were of such little value that five of them could be sold for a very small amount of money. Yet God remembers each of those little birds. And He cares for you and me even more, “But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.” (Luke 12:7)
Is life hard? Do you feel empty, forgotten, alone? There is One that cares for you very much. God loves you so much that, even though He is great and could make the stars and the moon and the sun simply by speaking or look after the tiny little sparrow, He knows all about you. He even knows how many hairs are on your head. He knows you inside and out. And He cares. A sparrow is not forgotten before God. And you are not forgotten before God either.
