Everything We Need
As we face staying home for days and having shortages of various things, there is something about which God reminds us in His word. We have everything we need.
Psalm 23:1 says, “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.” To want means to lack. Because the Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want; I will not lack. The rest of the Psalm goes on to tell us all the wonderful things we have because the Lord is our Shepherd. He is enough for life, and He is enough in death. We also will not lack in the hereafter; for, if we know the Lord Jesus as our Savior, we will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.” (Psalm 23:6) We have all we need for life here and all we need for the life to come.
II Peter 1:3 tells us this about God, “…his divine power hath given unto us
all things
that pertain unto
life and
godliness,
through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue.”
God has given us all we need for life and all the help we need to live that life in a godly way. These things come through learning to know our God more and more. As the passage goes on, it tells about exceeding great and precious promises and about wonderful things we can add to our faith. If these things be in us and about, we will be fruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
“Dear Father, we often sing of Your care. We quote Psalm 23 and talk about all we have because You are our Shepherd. You are enough and we don’t need things. But, when difficulties come and the things we expect to have are things we cannot have, then we begin to doubt. We begin to be afraid. It gives us time to look into our heart. Are we really content? Do we really believe we have everything we need? Lord, help us to trust You and to rest in the knowledge that You will not withhold one good thing from those who walk uprightly.* Help us, Lord! We need Your help. In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.”
