To take heed to means "to carefully consider with obedient regard." Read God’s word, listen to it, meditate on it. What does it say? What is God trying to tell me? While I do these things, I need to seek God with my whole heart and hide His word in my heart that I might not sin against Him.
In order to take heed to God’s word, there are several things I must do. Verses twelve through sixteen explain, “12) Blessed art thou, O LORD: teach me thy statutes. 13) With my lips have I declared all the judgments of thy mouth. 14) I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies, as much as in all riches. 15) I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways. 16) I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word.”
- I need the LORD to teach me His word
- I need to declare His word, speak what it means and share it with others
- I need to rejoice in His word as much as I would rejoice in riches
- I need to meditate on God’s word and have respect to God’s ways. In this verse, “have respect” means “to look intently at,” “to regard with pleasure,” “to consider,” “to regard,” “to have respect to.”
- I need to delight myself in God’s word
- I need to not forget God’s word. It is not enough to read it in the morning; get a thrilling feeling; think for a minute about God, His word, and myself; and then forget about it for the rest of the day. It needs to be the focus of my day so it can be the stay and guide of my life.
