A short study tonight but a sweet and happy one. Part of it is a quote from Matthew Henry. I do not agree with all of his commentary, but there are some things that he just says in such a meaningful and beautiful way, and this is one of them.
“Thy love is better than wine.” (Song of Solomon 1:2b)
The bride continues speaking, now not only of her lover, but rather to him.
Wine makes glad the heart of man (Psalm 104:15). Wine makes people forget pain and fear. It revives and exhilarates. Yet Matthew Henry points out that, as good as wine makes people feel, “…gracious souls take more pleasure in loving Christ and being beloved of him, in the fruits and gifts of his love and in the pledges and assurances of it, than any man ever took in the most exquisite delights of sense, and it is more reviving to them than ever the richest cordial was to one ready to faint."
