“O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: because his mercy endureth for ever.” says Psalm 118:1 A passage that comes to mind is Psalm 23. In this Psalm is a trip through life. There is God’s provision, rest, restoration, comfort in the shadow of death, presence and protection when we are surrounded by enemies, and goodness and mercy. God’s goodness and mercy is a blessing that He gives all our lives. Because of God's goodness and mercy, we have promise of blessing in the life to come as well. The last verse of Psalm 23 says, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.” After being blessed with God’s goodness and mercy all of our lives, we get to dwell in the LORD’s house for eternity.
Psalm 118 goes on to say, “2) Let Israel now say, that his mercy endureth for ever. 3) Let the house of Aaron now say, that his mercy endureth for ever. 4) Let them now that fear the LORD say, that his mercy endureth for ever.” (verses 2-4) It seems that God really wanted to get across that His mercy endures forever. Why does God have so much mercy? Because He loves us. Ephesians 2:4-7 explains, “4) But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, 5) Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) 6) And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: 7) That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.”
From the verses in Psalm 118, Psalm 23, and Ephesians 2, we see the wonderful blessing of God’s mercy. It takes care of us in this life, it manifests the love God has toward us when He offers us salvation, it allows us to see God’s kindness to us through Christ Jesus, and it assures us of a home with the LORD forever in eternity. Thank You, God, for Your goodness and mercy!
