“When the LORD turned again the captivity of Zion, we were like them that dream.” (Psalm 126:1) The people of Israel had been in captivity, but God turned their captivity and brought them out of it. To them it was like a dream – almost too wonderful to be real. “Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing: then said they among the heathen, The LORD hath done great things for them. The LORD hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad.” (verses 2&3) Their mouths were filled with laughter and songs of joy for the great things that were done for them. The other nations could see how God had helped them, and even they declared, “The LORD hath done great things for them.” When God does great things for His people, it makes His people very glad; it gives them happy hearts and joyful songs.
If captivity comes again, the answer is the same – cry out to God to turn it away. Those that labor with weeping, doing the work of God and sowing the seed of His word during hard times, will doubtless come again with joy, reaping the harvest of the labors they have sown. “4) Turn again our captivity, O LORD, as the streams in the south. 5) They that sow in tears shall reap in joy. 6) He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.” (verses 4-6)
So, let us labor faithfully, even though it may be with weeping and tears. “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” (Galatians 6:9)
