“And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.” (Genesis 2:9) God gave man every tree of the garden for enjoyment (“pleasant to the sight”) and for food. The tree of life also was given them for food, and happy they would have been if they had been content to eat therefrom.
God has blessed us with several trees of life, and happy we would be if we would be content to “eat” from them. Proverbs 3:18 says “She (wisdom—see verse 13) is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her.” We must “eat” from the tree of wisdom — lay hold upon her and retain her. And as we keep fast to her, happiness is promised.
In Proverbs 11:30, the fruit of the righteous is a tree of life from which we may partake. As we partake of her fruit of righteous living, we become a source of meaningful life for others. Righteous living is a means of winning souls. “The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.”
One other tree of life from which we may feast is a wholesome tongue, “wholesome” meaning a medicine, a cure, a remedy. “A wholesome tongue is a tree of life:” (Proverbs 15:4b) The words we speak can heal a broken heart or a wounded soul.
