There is one thing the world is looking for right now, and that is peace. But it does not seem like peace is coming any time soon. What do we do when life is full of twists and turns and our heart is stirred and troubled within us? We can do what king David did, “What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.” (Psalm 56:3) We can trust in God.
Peace comes with being justified by God, “1) Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: 2) By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.” (Romans 5:1,2)
This same Lord Jesus that gives us peace also strengthens us in our inner man by His Spirit, “That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man.” (Ephesians 3:16) This peace and strength from God help us to go through uncertain times. It gives us patience and hope and lets us know that we will not be ashamed because God is looking out for us. “3) And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; 4) And patience, experience; and experience, hope: 5) And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.” (Romans 5:3-5)
We have hope because we are the children of God. We are not in bondage and God has not given us a spirit of fear. Instead of the spirit of fear, we have the adoption of sons which allows us to cry “Abba Father.” This adoption also makes us recipients of the inheritance God has laid up for us, and we are joint-heirs with Jesus. “14) For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. 15) For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. 16) The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: 17) And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.” (Romans 8:14-17)
We may suffer with Christ now, but that suffering is small compared to the glory that awaits us later. “For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.” (Romans 8:18)
So let us hold our head up and rejoice. We have a hope, and the end for us is better than the beginning, “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” (Jeremiah 29:11)
