Psalm 139:13,14 says, “13) For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb. 14) I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.” You and I were precious to God from the time we were conceived in our mother’s womb. There God made us fearfully and wonderfully in His image. Consider these other verses about how lovingly and purposefully God made us.
“Did not he that made me in the womb make him? and did not one fashion us in the womb?” (Job 31:15)
“Even every one that is called by my name: for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him.” (Isaiah 43:7)
Do not think for a moment that the life growing in the womb is simply a blob or a piece of tissue. No. It is a human being that God is lovingly and carefully fashioning for His glory. “Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.” (Psalm 100:3) “6) O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the LORD our maker. 7) For he is our God; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand.” (Psalm 95:6,7a) Every life is precious and is specially made by God for His glory.
“My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.” (Psalm 139:15) We cannot see how a baby grows in the womb. Though we might have access to ultrasound technology that gives a good picture, we still cannot watch a baby grow and see how each part is formed. This is a secret known only to God. God knows every part as it grows, and every detail of a baby’s growth in the womb is written down by God in a book. In fact, God wrote all these details down before the baby even began to grow. “Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.” (Psalm 139:16)
“17) How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them! 18) If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with thee.” (Psalm 139:17,18) Every life is precious to God. We were so precious to God that He knew all our parts and how we would be formed even before He started forming us. He carefully put our parts together in our mother’s womb and brought us to the birth. He has known every moment since our birth. God knows when we get up, when we sit down, when we walk somewhere, when we lie down. Everywhere we go, God is there. He is before us and behind us and lays His hand on our life. He knows our thoughts and every word that we speak. God holds our breath in His hands. “In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.” (Job 12:10) Surely, we are fearfully and wonderfully made by God, and God is greatly to be praised.
