My Helper
“I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.” (Psalm 121:1,2) Look on the hills. Look on the sky. Look on all the beautiful things God created in the earth. The same God who made all these things is my Helper. According to Genesis chapter one, He made all these things just by speaking. This is the God to whom I can look for help. If He can do all these things, should I think that anything is too hard for Him? Not a thing. Help is there if I just lift up my eyes and look unto the One who can give it.
My Keeper
“Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand. The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.” (verses 4-6)
I can sleep in peace because the God that keeps Israel is my God too, and He never sleeps. He is my keeper and gives me shade and protects me both night and day. This Psalm perhaps alludes to the time when the children of Israel walked through the wilderness and God protected them from the hot sun with a cloud by day and from the cold desert nights with a pillar of fire. The God who has power over the forces of nature is my keeper. If He can shield from the sun and moon, if He can control the wind and the sea,* surely He will care for me.
My Preserver
“The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.” (verses 7 and 8)
Evil cannot destroy the child of God. The God who loved me and gave Himself for me will preserve me, in this life and in the next. He will preserve me when I go out and when I come in. He will preserve me now and for the rest of my life. When this life is over, He will preserve me for all eternity. I am His now and forever.
What a beautiful Psalm. What comforting promises. What a wonderful God!
