The fifth and final section of Psalm 136 tells about the God of mercy who remembers those in need. “O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.” (Psalm 136:1)
1. God remembers those who are brought low.
“Who remembered us in our low estate: for his mercy endureth for ever.” (Psalm 136:23)
God remembered Israel when they were in bondage in Egypt and all the times they were troubled or distressed in the wilderness. This same God remembers all who are brought low, and He will remember us in our low estate as well. Consider these wonderful verses.
“He will regard the prayer of the destitute, and not despise their prayer.” (Psalm 102:17)
“12) For he shall deliver the needy when he crieth; the poor also, and him that hath no helper. 13) He shall spare the poor and needy, and shall save the souls of the needy. 14) He shall redeem their soul from deceit and violence: and precious shall their blood be in his sight.” (Psalm 72:12-14)
“4) Then called I upon the name of the LORD; O LORD, I beseech thee, deliver my soul. 5) Gracious is the LORD, and righteous; yea, our God is merciful. 6) The LORD preserveth the simple: I was brought low, and he helped me. 7) Return unto thy rest, O my soul; for the LORD hath dealt bountifully with thee. 8) For thou hast delivered my soul from death, mine eyes from tears, and my feet from falling. 9) I will walk before the LORD in the land of the living.” (Psalm 116:4-9)
2. God redeems His people from their enemies.
“And hath redeemed us from our enemies: for his mercy endureth for ever.” (Psalm 136:24) The hope for a nation (or individuals) set around by enemies is the Lord. “6) This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles. 7) The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.” (Psalm 34:6,7)
“8) O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him. 9) O fear the LORD, ye his saints: for there is no want to them that fear him.” (Psalm 34:8,9)
3. God supplies food to all flesh – man and beast
“Who giveth food to all flesh: for his mercy endureth for ever.” (Psalm 136:25)
“14) The LORD upholdeth all that fall, and raiseth up all those that be bowed down. 15) The eyes of all wait upon thee; and thou givest them their meat in due season. 16) Thou openest thine hand, and satisfiest the desire of every living thing.” (Psalm 145:14-16)
See also Psalm 104 which describes all the things God has made and all the ways that He provides for them. God cares for people, and He cares for His creation. Food and water to drink come from Him.
“O give thanks unto the God of heaven: for his mercy endureth for ever.” (Psalm 136:26)
