In the holy Bible, God gave us a special treasure. The Bible is a light. It can give understanding to the simple, it can lead people to salvation, and it can direct our paths as we walk in the way with Him after we are saved.
Does a person need to come to Jesus as Savior? Does it seem like they are having a hard time understanding things? What will help them? The thing that will open their eyes and give them understanding is the word of God. Psalm 119:130 says, “The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.” There is no need for digging into the “originals,” giving great theological dissertations, or going into lengthy, possibly confusing explanations. Simply give the word of God. It’s light is powerful enough to open the understanding of the simple. God did not plan for His word or the message of the gospel to be too hard to understand. “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” (Romans 10:17)
God’s word is good for cleansing after one is saved. If a person sins but has a repentant heart and wants to know what the right way is that he or she should travel, that person need only to look at the word of God. Proverbs 6:23 says, “The commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life.” Psalm 119:9 explains, “Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.” Also, Psalm 19:8-11 says, “8.) The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes. 9) The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. 10) More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. 11) Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.”
The word of God teaches us how we ought to walk. We read in II Timothy 3:16,17, “16) All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17) That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.” As believers, we can join the Psalmist in saying, “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee” and also “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” (Psalm 119:11 and 105)
