Psalm 139 is one of the most beautiful and comforting Psalms in the Bible. It tells us about a God who made us and knows us. He made you. He made me. He knows everything about us. He fashioned us in love. “O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me.” (verse 1)
How does God know us? Let us consider the ways.
1. God knows when we sit down and when we stand up.
“Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising.” (verse 2a)
2. God knows everything we think.
“Thou understandest my thought afar off.” (verse 2b)
3. God knows when we lie down to sleep or when we walk and go somewhere. He compasses our path, or is all around it. That helps to keep us from danger we cannot see.
“Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways.” (verse 3)
4. God knows every word we say.
“For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether.” (verse 4)
5. God is before us and behind us and His hand is laid upon us. He knows us through and through and is with us every moment.
“Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me.” (verse 5)
We cannot understand such knowledge as God has. However, it should be a comfort to us that God knows everything about us. There is not a thing that He does not know, and He never leaves us; no, not for a moment. “Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it.” (verse 6) Thank You, God, for being so great a God and for the great love wherewith You love us.
