Psalm 138:7 says, “Though I walk in the midst of trouble, thou wilt revive me: thou shalt stretch forth thine hand against the wrath of mine enemies, and thy right hand shall save me.” Even though we may now have troubles on every side, we have a God who can lift us up out of those troubles and give us comfort. “19) Thy righteousness also, O God, is very high, who hast done great things: O God, who is like unto thee! 20) Thou, which hast shewed me great and sore troubles, shalt quicken me again, and shalt bring me up again from the depths of the earth. 21) Thou shalt increase my greatness, and comfort me on every side.” (Psalm 71:19-21) The Psalmist trusted in God’s promise of comfort and hope. “49) Remember the word unto thy servant, upon which thou hast caused me to hope. 50) This is my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath quickened me.” (Psalm 119:49,50)
Do we feel that we are in danger? Are there enemies all around us? Enemies can be physical enemies or they can be spiritual enemies – the powers and forces of darkness that battle for the souls of men and battle against those trying to do the work of God. King David cried to the Lord for deliverance against His enemies, “1) Plead my cause, O LORD, with them that strive with me: fight against them that fight against me. 2) Take hold of shield and buckler, and stand up for mine help. 3) Draw out also the spear, and stop the way against them that persecute me: say unto my soul, I am thy salvation. 4) Let them be confounded and put to shame that seek after my soul: let them be turned back and brought to confusion that devise my hurt.” (Psalm 35:1-4) We have the same God who will rise up to plead our cause and to be our deliverer when we face attack by the enemy.
Psalm 44:5-7 says, “5) Through thee will we push down our enemies: through thy name will we tread them under that rise up against us. 6) For I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save me. 7) But thou hast saved us from our enemies, and hast put them to shame that hated us.” We can always be confident that we have the Lord for our help and that His right hand is stretched out to save us. “10) Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. 11) Behold, all they that were incensed against thee shall be ashamed and confounded: they shall be as nothing; and they that strive with thee shall perish. 12) Thou shalt seek them, and shalt not find them, even them that contended with thee: they that war against thee shall be as nothing, and as a thing of nought. 13) For I the LORD thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.” (Isaiah 41:10-13)
The Lord will not allow His work to be brought to nought but will perfect the work He does in and through those who trust in Him, “The LORD will perfect that which concerneth me: thy mercy, O LORD, endureth for ever: forsake not the works of thine own hands.” (Psalm 138:8)
