Although David was in fear of his enemies and crying out to the Lord to keep and preserve him, David had confidence in his God. David knew in whom he should put his trust. In Psalm 140:6 David said, “I said unto the LORD, Thou art my God: hear the voice of my supplications, O LORD.” The LORD was David’s God. He knew that he could cry out to the Lord and the Lord would hear him.
For those of us who know the Lord Jesus as Savior and have put our trust in God, we can have the same confidence David had. Psalm 146:5 says, “Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the LORD his God.” We can make our supplications to the Lord God and know that He will hear our voice and He will help. The God of Jacob is our God and our hope is in the LORD.
God is not only our confidant, but also our strength. “O GOD the Lord, the strength of my salvation, thou hast covered my head in the day of battle.” (Psalm 140:7) It is through the Lord that we have salvation, both of our souls and of our physical lives. We cry out to Him for protection and deliverance from our enemies. In Psalm 18:35, David said, “Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy right hand hath holden me up, and thy gentleness hath made me great.” Also, in Isaiah 41:10, the Lord said, “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.” If we slip, God will uphold us. If we are dismayed, God will lift us up. If we are afraid, God is with us holding us by the right hand of His righteousness. We are never alone. We have God for our helper, and He will never forsake us.
God is the one that covers our head, or protects us, in the day of battle. This is true whether we are out in a battle, such as fighting for our country, or involved in spiritual battle. For our spiritual battle, God has given us a full set of armor for our protection. (See Ephesians 6:10-20) Even though He has provided all this armor, God does not leave us to fight our battles alone. He is with us every moment and covers us and fights for us. Psalm 144:10 says, “It is he that giveth salvation unto kings: who delivereth David his servant from the hurtful sword.” In II Chronicles 20:17, God spoke to Jehoshaphat as he was going out to battle and told him, “Ye shall not need to fight in this battle: set yourselves, stand ye still , and see the salvation of the LORD with you, O Judah and Jerusalem: fear not, nor be dismayed; to morrow go out against them: for the LORD will be with you.” Jehoshaphat and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem believed the Lord, “And Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground: and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell before the LORD, worshipping the LORD.” (II Chronicles 20:18) God has control over physical enemies and over the powers of darkness. Jesus defeated the devil at the cross, and the victory over spiritual darkness is already won. In John 12:31, Jesus said, “Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.” The world can seem like a dark and frightening place, but we can have joy because our salvation is in Jesus. We do not have to fear the powers in this world. Jesus said, “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33) The world may be full of tribulation, but there is no disappointment in Jesus.
David had a very specific request for the Lord his God. He prayed that God would keep the wicked from prospering and carrying out their evil plans. He prayed, “Grant not, O LORD, the desires of the wicked: further not his wicked device; lest they exalt themselves. Selah.” Proverbs 21:30 gives this assurance, “There is no wisdom nor understanding nor counsel against the LORD.” No one can fight against the Lord and win, and there is no counsel wiser than the wisdom of God. God promises, “The arms of the wicked shall be broken: but the LORD upholdeth the righteous.” (Psalm 37:17) Also, the words of Scripture bring us this encouragement, “10) The LORD bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought: he maketh the devices of the people of none effect. 11) The counsel of the LORD standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.” (Psalm 33:10,11)
The Lord is our God and this God is our confidant, our strength and our protection. He has overcome the world; He is victorious over evil and wickedness; and His counsel and wisdom stand for ever. This God is our God. We can be happy because we have the God of Jacob for our help.
