David was waiting patiently on the Lord to deliver him, but he felt that his time was running out. Desperately he pleaded with God, “Hear me speedily, O LORD: my spirit faileth: hide not thy face from me, lest I be like unto them that go down into the pit.” (Psalm 143:7)
Do you feel that time is running out for you? Do you wonder where God is? Do you wonder why He is not working? Why not tell Him so. Perhaps He is just waiting for fervent, earnest prayer. In Psalm 13, David pours out his heart, “How long wilt thou forget me, O LORD? for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me? 2) How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart daily? how long shall mine enemy be exalted over me? 3) Consider and hear me, O LORD my God: lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death; 4) Lest mine enemy say, I have prevailed against him; and those that trouble me rejoice when I am moved.” (verses 1-4) More than once David experienced a time when he was sure that he would die if God did not intervene. Where was God? Why was He taking so long? Would He just keep waiting until it was too late, until David died? These were questions David had, and he poured them out to God.
Though David prayed desperately for deliverance from his danger and fear, he knew that God’s plan was best and he trusted in God’s plan. Consider the last two verses of Psalm 13, “5) But I have trusted in thy mercy; my heart shall rejoice in thy salvation. 6) I will sing unto the LORD, because he hath dealt bountifully with me.” (verses 5 and 6) Because David trusted in the Lord, he would wait to hear the lovingkindness of the Lord and would place his soul in the Lord’s hands, “Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto thee.” (Psalm 143:8)
The care of the Lord God was the safest place for David’s soul and the place where he would find reviving for his spirit, so he trusted in God and waited on him. We can trust in God too. Under His care is the safest place for our soul to be and the place where we can have our spirit revived. We may be desperate for help, but we can still trust because there is no place safer than God’s care.
