Psalm 146:5 says, “Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the LORD his God.” So what is this God of Jacob like? What kind of God is the Lord our God? Verses six through ten tell us a number of things about our great big, wonderful God.
- God is the Creator, “Which made heaven, and earth, the sea, and all that therein is.” (verse 6a) Everything that you see around you in nature, God made it. He created all things, and He is now “upholding all things by the word of his power.” (See Hebrews 1:3)
- God keeps truth forever, “…which keepeth truth for ever.” (Psalm 146b) Psalm 100:4,5 says, “4) Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name. 5) For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.” Hebrews 6:18 describes God as “impossible for God to lie.”
- God judges the wicked and helps the oppressed. “Which executeth judgment for the oppressed: which giveth food to the hungry.” (Psalm 146:7a) Psalm 10:17.18 explains, “17) LORD, thou hast heard the desire of the humble: thou wilt prepare their heart, thou wilt cause thine ear to hear: 18) To judge the fatherless and the oppressed, that the man of the earth may no more oppress.” (Psalm 10:17.18)
- God sets the prisoner free. “…The LORD looseth the prisoners.” (Psalm 146:7b) Consider these wonderful words from Psalm 107, “10) Such as sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, being bound in affliction and iron; 11) Because they rebelled against the words of God, and contemned the counsel of the most High… 13) Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them out of their distresses. 14) He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and brake their bands in sunder. 15) Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men! 16) For he hath broken the gates of brass, and cut the bars of iron in sunder.” (verses 10 & 11 and 13-16)
- God opens the eyes of the blind. “The LORD openeth the eyes of the blind.” (Psalm 146:8a) The Lord opens the eyes of those who are spiritually blind. This is also a prophesy of the coming Messiah, Jesus Christ, who would open blind eyes and unstop deaf ears. When John the Baptist was in prison and began to doubt whether Jesus was the Messiah, he sent two disciples to Jesus to ask Him, “Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?” Jesus told them to go show John the things which they had seen and heard, “The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.” These were evidences that Jesus was the Messiah. You can read this account in Matthew 11:1-6.
- God comforts the weak and the heavy hearted. “… the LORD raiseth them that are bowed down.” (See Psalm 146:8) Psalm 145:14 says, “The LORD upholdeth all that fall, and raiseth up all those that be bowed down.” II Corinthians 7:6 describes God as “God, that comforteth those that are cast down.”
- God loves the righteous. “the LORD loveth the righteous.” (See Psalm 146:8)
- God preserves those who fear Him, but He judges the wicked. “The LORD preserveth the strangers; he relieveth the fatherless and widow: but the way of the wicked he turneth upside down.” (Psalm 148:9) These verses from Psalm 11 explain more, “5) The LORD trieth the righteous: but the wicked and him that loveth violence his soul hateth. 6) Upon the wicked he shall rain snares, fire and brimstone, and an horrible tempest: this shall be the portion of their cup. 7) For the righteous LORD loveth righteousness; his countenance doth behold the upright.” (verses 5-7) Psalm five verses eleven and twelve explain how God will bless the righteous, “11) But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice: let them ever shout for joy, because thou defendest them: let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee. 12) For thou, LORD, wilt bless the righteous; with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield.“
- God will reign forever. “The LORD shall reign for ever, even thy God, O Zion, unto all generations. Praise ye the LORD.” (Psalm 146:10)
We see what a wonderful God the Lord is. This God is our God. This God is our help and our hope. What a mighty and wonderful God is the LORD our God!
