How are the unsaved like the false idols they worship? First, they trust in those idols. They make those idols themselves, or worship idols that other people make. There are idols that are not graven images. Anything that a person loves, respects, fears, or trusts more than God is an idol. Those who claim not to have any religious affiliation really worship themselves. They think that they are sufficient in themselves. All of these individuals trust in something or someone that cannot do anything to help them.
The unsaved, the lost, are also like the idols because they are dead, spiritually dead. Psalm 115:7 says, “The dead praise not the LORD, neither any that go down into silence.” The lost may acknowledge God or even say they believe in God, but they cannot really praise God in worship because they are spiritually dead. The Scripture says, “1) And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; 2) Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience.” (Ephesians 2:1,2) Those who are lost are dead in trespasses and sins. They walk according to the course of this world, according the prince of the power of the air (that is the devil, Satan). Satan still works in the children of disobedience (those who have not trusted Christ) today. The lost are spiritually dead and cannot worship the Lord now or in the life to come.
There is a remedy for the lost condition. Psalm 115:11 says, “Ye that fear the LORD, trust in the LORD: he is their help and their shield.” Fear the LORD, trust in Him, believe in the name of His only begotten Son. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16) The Lord is not like the idols; He is not helpless. He is the help and the shield of all those who put their trust in Him. Those who fear God and have everlasting life by believing on the name of the Son of God, that is Jesus Christ, do have a helper and someone who can take care of them. They can also worship God and give Him praise, not only in this life, but also in that which is to come. They can bless the Lord now and even for evermore. “But we will bless the LORD from this time forth and for evermore. Praise the LORD.” (Psalm 115:18) Put your trust in God today and in His Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and our true helper and shield now, in the future, and for evermore.
