What an amazing thing to ponder! God thinks on me. Psalm 139:17 says, “How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them!” God’s thoughts toward us are precious. He does not look down and say, “Now look what this child of mine did today. I just don’t know what I’m going to do about him.” No, God thinks precious thoughts toward me, toward you. God formed and created us. We are made for His glory. He looks and thinks on us with love. “The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.” (Zephaniah 3:17) This verse was spoken specifically to Israel regarding Zion, but we have the same God and His character does not change. He looks upon us with love and joy. We are precious to Him as His creation.
Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” When the Lord looks on us, He thinks thoughts of peace toward us. He does not wish to bring us to evil, that is, to destroy us; but to give us an expected end. The world is full of turmoil and confusion. We do not know what to expect when we look at the world. But we know what to expect when we look to the Lord. In the Lord, we can expect peace, cheer, and victory, “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)
Psalm 85:8-11 explains more about the expected end for the child of God. What can we expect in this world and in the world to come? “8) I will hear what God the LORD will speak: for he will speak peace unto his people, and to his saints: but let them not turn again to folly. 9) Surely his salvation is nigh them that fear him; that glory may dwell in our land. 10) Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other. 11) Truth shall spring out of the earth; and righteousness shall look down from heaven.” What we can expect in the Lord is peace, salvation, glory, mercy, truth, and righteousness. We may be disappointed in the world, but there is no disappointment in the Lord.
God does not just sit and think an occasional good thought toward us. Rather, He thinks many good thoughts toward us. Verse 18 of Psalm 139 says, “If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with thee.” Also, in Psalm 40:5, the Bible says, “Many, O LORD my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.” We are never out of God’s thoughts. He thinks on us with so many thoughts they could never be numbered. This assures us that we can trust in Him. “7) How excellent is thy lovingkindness, O God! therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings. 8) They shall be abundantly satisfied with the fatness of thy house; and thou shalt make them drink of the river of thy pleasures. 9) For with thee is the fountain of life: in thy light shall we see light. 10) O continue thy lovingkindness unto them that know thee; and thy righteousness to the upright in heart.” (Psalm 36:7-10) Such is the goodness and kindness that one can expect when their trust is in the Lord God.
How wonderful to know and ponder the thoughts of God toward us and the expected end He has for us! We can trust in His protection, drink of the river of His pleasure, be satisfied with His provision, partake freely of the fountain of life, walk in His light, and joy in His loving kindness and righteousness. Thank You, God, for these wonderful, beautiful and precious thoughts you think toward me.
